Description
Barbara, Henrietta, and Jack Curtis were long-time residents of the Battle Creek community and supporters of the Lakeview Schools. This scholarship was established in memory of them by their family. Eligible applicants must be a resident of the Lakeview School District in Battle Creek, graduating from Lakeview High School or an area district administering the special education program that the student is attending. Student must be a graduating high school senior who is physically or orthopedically challenged (e.g.: flat feet, autism, asthma, learning disabilities, etc.) and plans to attend a two or four-year college or university or accredited institution for post high school studies. Considerations are: potential for success in higher education, demonstration of being achievement-oriented and wants to achieve independence and an ability to live above the handicap.

Scholarship Eligibility & Criteria
The applicant must be a graduating senior from Lakeview High School or an area district administering the special education programs that the student is attending, and must be a resident of the Lakeview School District. The applicant must be physically or orthopedically challenged in accordance with the definitions set forth in special education rules and regulations of the State of Michigan, and plan to attend a two or four-year college or university.
Consideration is given to the student who has potential for success in higher education; one who is achievement oriented and wants to make it on his/her own; one who has the ability to live above the handicap. Financial need is not a primary consideration.
Award
Only earnings from the scholarship fund shall be awarded and determined on an annual basis. Generally, the amount will be $1,000. If no applicants qualify, no new award is given.
Renewable
Renewal consideration will be given to previous recipients, if they qualify.
